Good to know about Italian

Italian is a Romance language, and English has thousands of words from Latin and French, so much of the vocabulary looks familiar: famiglia (family), musica (music), problema (problem), interessante (interesting).

Nouns are masculine or feminine, and the ending usually shows which: words ending in -o are masculine, il libro (the book), and words ending in -a feminine, la casa (the house). In the plural the vowel changes: libri, case.

Italian is pronounced as it is written. Double consonants are held longer and tell words apart: nono means ninth and nonno grandfather.

c and g are soft before e and i: ciao, gelato. An h makes them hard again: chi, spaghetti.

The numbers 11 to 16 end in -dici (undici, dodici), and from 17 the ten comes first: diciassette.
