Good to know about French

A large share of English vocabulary came from French, so many words are the same or close: table, animal, important, différent.

Nouns are masculine or feminine: le livre (the book), la maison (the house). Before a vowel the article becomes l’: l’école (the school). The word itself rarely shows its gender, so learn the article together with it.

Spelling and pronunciation are far apart. Consonants at the end of a word are often silent: in petit, trois and vingt the last letters are not pronounced.

The accents are part of the spelling and change the sound: é in école, è in mère, ç in français.

The numbers have a quirk: 70 is soixante-dix, sixty-ten, and 80 is quatre-vingts, four twenties.
