Numbers 11-20 in German
Question Answer
11 elf
12 zwölf
13 dreizehn
14 vierzehn
15 fünfzehn
16 sechzehn
17 siebzehn
18 achtzehn
19 neunzehn
20 zwanzig

How the numbers work

Elf (11) and zwölf (12) look a lot like eleven and twelve.

13 to 19 are the number plus -zehn, which means ten, like English -teen: dreizehn is 3 + 10 = 13. The same goes for vierzehn, fünfzehn, achtzehn and neunzehn.

Two of them get shorter, and the bold part disappears: sechs becomes sechzehn (16) and sieben becomes siebzehn (17). 20 is zwanzig.
